Firmware u
pdates
Firmware is software that is stored in Read-Only Memory (ROM). Firmware is responsible for the behavior
of the syst
em when it is rst switched on and for passing control of the server to the operating system.
When refe
rring to the rmware on the system board of the server, it is called the System ROM or the
BIOS. Whe
n referring to the rmware on another piece of hardware congured in the server, it is called
Option ROM. ProLiant servers have hard driv es, Smart Array Controllers, Remote Insight Lights-Out
Edition (RILOE), Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition II (RILOE II) and Integrated Lights-Out options that
have rmware that can be updated.
It is imp
ortant to update the rmware (also called ashing the ROM”) as part of regular server
mainten
ance. In addition, checking for specic rmware updates in between regular updates helps to
keep th
e server performing optimally. HP recommends checking for a rmware update before sending a
part ba
ck to HP for replacement.
Certicate of Authenticity
The Certi cate of Authenticity (COA) label is used to:
Upgrade the factory-installed operating system using the Microsoft Upgrade program for license
validation.
Reinstall the operating system because of a failure that has permanently disabled it.
The COA label location varies by server model. On rack-mounted server m odels, the COA label is
located either on the front section of the right panel or on the right front corner of the top panel. On
tower models, the COA label is located toward the rear of the top panel of the server.
