Glossary-3
Multimode
Identifies a type of fiber optic transmission. Signals can travel farther through
single-mode fiber than through multimode fiber. The Versalar 15000 supports
several types of cards, among them OC-3c and OC-12c, that come in both single-
mode and multimode fiber.
Nonredundant
Configuration
Does not allow failover to a redundant AP card since there is no access
redundancy module (ARM) installed in slot 5. In such configurations, slot 5 is
either not populated or has an interface card installed.
Option Card Slot
Identifies the 2-slot PCMCIA located on the SSP card that permits the installation
of option cards.
Processor Card
Occupies slots 1 to 12 in the front of the Versalar 15000 and includes the
following types of cards:
AP cards
IFP cards
SSP cards
TP cards
Typically, the SSP cards provide system control, the AP and TP cards provide
network layer protocol processing on data packets, and the IFP cards operate as
protocol forwarding engines.
Processor Filler
Card
Identifies the card located in each empty processor card slot in the Versalar
15000. It directs cool air to the adjacent processor card. Any time a processor
card is removed from the Versalar 15000 without an immediate replacement, a
processor filler card must be installed.
Redundant
Configuration
Allows failover to a redundant AP card as long as an ARM card is installed in slot
5 in the back of the Versalar 15000 chassis.
Single-Mode
Identifies a type of fiber optic transmission that is capable of higher bandwidth
and greater cable run distances than multimode fiber. The Versalar 15000
supports several types of cards, among them OC-3c and OC-12c, that come in
both single-mode and multimode fiber.
System Services
Processor (SSP)
Card
Acts as the central processing resource (CPR) on which the network layer
protocols run. SSP cards are responsible for Versalar 15000 route determination,
statistics, and central management. The Versalar 15000 can support two SSP
cards in slots 9 and 10 in the front of the unit.
SSP Interface Card
Provides dedicated interfaces for out-of-band management, as well as system-
wide status. The SSP interface cards are the SSP interface console card and the
SSP interface Ethernet card. In the Versalar 15000, they occupy slots 9 and 10 in
the back of the chassis.
