10-2 Glossary
Glossary
10Base2
A cable used for networking. It is a coaxial cable
consisting of a center wire and a shield separated by
an insulating material. It is commonly called
Thinnet.
10Base5
A cable used for networking. It is a coaxial cable
consisting of a center wire and a shield separated by
an insulating material. It is often called Thicknet.
10Base-T
An implementation of the Ethernet IEEE standard
on 24 gauge twisted-pair wiring, a baseband
medium, at 10 megabits per second. It is composed
of two insulated wires twisted together. 10Base-T
cable can be shielded or unshielded. Shielded cable
provides more protection from noise than
unshielded cable.
802.3
Defined by the IEEE, these standards govern the
use of the CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple
Access/Collision Detection) network access
method used by Ethernet networks.
802.5
Defined by the IEEE, these standards govern the
use of the Token Ring network access method.
ALAP
An acronym for AppleTalk Link Access Protocol.
In an AppleTalk network, this link access (or data
link-layer) protocol governs packet transmission on
LocalTalk.
ANSI
An acronym for American National Standards
Institute. This is the principal group in the United
States for determining standards. ANSI represents
the United States in the ISO.
AppleShare
Apple Computer's network system implementing
the AppleTalk protocol.
