Glossary 10-11
Peer to Peer network
A system in which two or more nodes or processes
can initiate communications with each other.
Usually describes a network in which all nodes
have the ability to share resources with other nodes
so that a dedicated server can be implemented but is
not required. Windows for Workgroups, NetWare
Lite, and Macintosh System 7 are examples of peer-
to-peer networking products.

RARP
An acronym for Reverse Address Resolution
Protocol. A TCP/IP protocol governing the
translation of a DLC (Data Link Control) address to
an IP (Internet Protocol) address. This is a method
for providing IP Addresses to nodes on a network.
When a node powers up, it broadcasts a RARP
packet containing its Ethernet Address. The RARP
server receives the packet and sends the IP Address
back to the node.
