Troubleshooting
Error Messages
You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your MFC or telephone line.
If this happens, your MFC often identifies the problem and displays an error
message. The list below explains the most common error messages. You can
correct most problems yourself. If you need additional help, call the Brother fax-
back system at

IMPORTANT
For technical and operational assistance, you must call the country where you
purchased the MFC. Calls must be made from within that country.
ERROR MESSAGE CAUSE ACTION
CHANGE DRUM
SOON
The drum unit is near the
end of its life.
Use the drum unit until
you have a print quality
problem, then replace the
drum unit with a new one.
CHECK PAPER The MFC is out of paper or
paper is not properly
loaded in the multi-
purpose sheet feeder.
Refill the paper or
remove the paper and
load it again and then
press Fax Start.
CHECK PAPER
SIZE
Your Paper Size setting
may not be set correctly
for the paper you are
using (see page 4-1).
Change either paper in the
multi-purpose sheet
feeder or change paper
size setting, and then press
Fax Start.
COMM. ERROR A poor quality phone
line caused
communications error.
Try the call again.
CONNECTION
FAIL
You tried to poll a fax
machine that is not in
Polled Waiting mode.
Verify the other partys
polling setup.
