Functional and Operational Characteristics
3.7.1 Hitachi TrueCopy (TC)
Hitachi TrueCopy enables open-system users to perform synchronous and/or asynchronous
remote copy operations between 9900 subsystems. The user can create, split, and
resynchronize LU pairs. TrueCopy also supports a “takeover” command for remote host
takeover (with the appropriate middleware support). Once established, TrueCopy operations
continue unattended and provide continuous, real-time data backup. Remote copy
operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary TrueCopy volumes to remain online to all
hosts for both read and write I/O operations. TrueCopy operations can also be performed
between 9900, 7700E, and 7700 subsystems (the 7700 supports only synchronous remote
copy).
Hitachi TrueCopy supports both serial (ESCON
®
) and fibre-channel interface connections
between the main and remote 9900 subsystems. For serial interface connection, TrueCopy
operations can be performed across distances of up to 43 km (26.7 miles) using standard
ESCON
®
support. For fibre-channel connection, TrueCopy operations can be performed
across distances of up to 30 km (18.6 miles) using single-mode longwave optical fibre cables
in a switch configuration. Long-distance solutions are provided, based on user requirements
and workload characteristics, using approved channel extenders and communication lines.

Systems account team.
3.7.2 Hitachi TrueCopy – S/390
®
(TC390)
Hitachi TrueCopy – S/390
®
(TC390) enables S/390
®
users to perform synchronous and
asynchronous remote copy operations between 9900 subsystems. Hitachi TrueCopy – S/390
®
can be used to maintain copies of data for backup or duplication purposes. Once established,
TC390 operations continue unattended and provide continuous, real-time data backup.
Remote copy operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary TrueCopy volumes to
remain online to all hosts for both read and write I/O operations.
Hitachi TrueCopy – S/390
®
also supports both serial (ESCON
®
) and fibre-channel interface
connections between the main and remote 9900 subsystems. Remote copy operations can
also be performed between 9900, 7700E, and 7700 subsystems (with some restrictions, e.g.,
the 7700 does not support asynchronous remote copy).
