Glossary
This Glossary defines commonly used terms to help new users understand
computer concepts. Some of these terms are used in this guide.
A
Acrobat Reader
Software
created by Adobe Systems that
allows you to view an electronic
document with the exact layout
intended by the author. The
Acrobat Reader can be
downloaded free of charge from
the Adobe Web site.

anti-virus software
A
program that detects and, in
many cases, repairs the damage
caused by a computer virus.
application
Software installed
on a computer.

B
backup
Copy of a file that is
kept in case the original is lost or
damaged. Backups can be kept
on the hard disk, a floppy
diskette, an LS Compaq drive, or
even a CD.
bit
The smallest possible piece
of computer information—a
single digit. See also digital.
boot
To start or restart the
computer. During the startup
process, information necessary
for the computer to operate is
loaded into memory.
