1.1 LASERPRINTING
BeforeyoubeginlearningaboutyournewStarLaserPrinter4,youmayfind
it helpfulto knowsomethingaboutlaserprintingitself.
A laser is actually a beam of light of just one wavelength(Laser is an
acronymfor Light Amplificationby StimulatedEmissionof Radiation).
Sucha beamof light,describedas“highlycoherent”,can be focusedvery
sharply.Lasers,generatedby gases,liquidsor semiconductors,a~ widely
usedin applicationsrangingfromsurgeryto thevisualarts.
Laserprintingis a processthatusesa laserbeam— in thiscase,generated
byasemiconductor-to activateportionsofanelectricallychargedsurface.
Theseactivatedpartsrepresentthe words,numbers,orgraphicsbeingsent
fromthecomputerforprinting.Otherpartsofthepnntertransferthisimage
to paper,thencleanthesurfaceandprepareit to receivemoreinformation

In the StarLaserPrinter4, two intercomectedunitsproducethe complete
printingprocess:thetonercartridgeandtheprinterbody.
Thetonercartridgecontainsthedrum,whichis therotatingsurface.In the
darknessofthetonercartridge,thedrumholdsanegativechargeplacedon
it by the primarycoronawirein theprinter.Shutterson thebottomof the
tonercartridgeassurethatno unwantedlightpenetratesits interior.
