Thissectionprovidestheproceduresforconnectingunsh ieldedtwistedpair(UTP)
segmentsfromthenetworkorotherdevicestothe7H4385‐49(“ConnectingUTPCablesto
7H4385‐49”onpage 3‐15).
Connecting UTP Cables to 7H4385-49
ThefixedRJ45frontpanelconnectionsofthe7H4385‐49are10/100Mbpsports.These
portshaveinternalcrossovers,andsupportautomatic‐polaritysensingwhenconfigured
forautomatic‐negotiation.
Ifautomatic‐negotiationisnotactivatedonaport,useastraight‐throughcablewhen
connectingaworkstationtotheport.When
connectinganetworkingdevicetotheport,
suchasabridge,repeater,orrouter,useacrossovercable.
Ifaportissetforauto‐negotiation,automatic‐polaritysensingisalsoactivated.
Automatic‐polaritysensingeliminatestheneedforacrossovercable,regardlessifthe
connectionistoanothernetworkdevice
oraworkstation.
TheRJ45fixedfrontpanelconnectorsofthe7H4385‐49alsosupportPoE‐compliant
connectionstoPDs(powereddevices)thatrequire48VdcthroughtheUTPcableto
operate.Whetherthe48VdcisavailablethroughthebackplaneofanN5chassisor
externallyfromanN‐POE
PowerSystem,youcanverifyifthereispowerateachportas
describedlaterinthisprocedure.
Note: If the DFE module is being installed in a network using Link Aggregation, there are
rules concerning the network cable and port configurations that must be followed for Link
Aggregation to operate properly. Before connecting the cables, refer to the Enterasys
Matrix DFE-Platinum Series Configuration Guide for the configuration information. For
details on how to obtain manuals, refer to the “Related Documents” in About This Guide.
Note: All RJ45 front panel ports on the 7H4385-49 support Category 5 Unshielded
Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling with an impedance between 85 and 111 ohms. Category 3
cable may be used if the connection is going to be used only for 10 Mbps.
