Checking the type of power management on your system
ACPI is available only if Windows 98 was installed with ACPI enabled. If
Windows 98 was not installed with ACPI enabled, APM power management
is available.
To check the type of power management on your system:
1 Click
Start
, then select
Settings
, then
Control Panel
. The Control Panel
window opens.
2 Double-click
System
. The System Properties window opens.
3 Click the
Device Manager
tab, then double-click
System devices
. The type
of power management supported appears at the top of the list under
System devices
.
If you want to enable ACPI in Windows 98, see the Microsoft Web site for
instructions.
Putting your system into Standby (S1)
You can put your system into Standby by clicking
Start,
then selecting
Shutdown
,
Standby
, then clicking
OK
. This procedure puts your system into
Standby with both APM and ACPI.
If ACPI is enabled on your system, you can also set a timer or press the power
button to put your system into Standby.
To set the standby timer:
1 Click
Start
, then select
Settings
, then
Control Panel
. The Control Panel
window opens.
2 Double-click the
Power Management
icon.
The Power Management
Properties window opens.
3 On the
Power Schemes
tab, set the timer. Your system enters Standby
when it has been inactive for the amount of time you set.
To set the computer’s power button to put the system into Standby:
1 Click
Start
, then select
Settings
, then
Control Panel
. The Control Panel
window opens.
2 Double-click the
Power Management
icon.
The Power Management
Properties window opens.
