Remote Notification
14.1 Description
Remote Notification provides the user with the option of receiving alarms and
notices at a remote location. Remote Notification operates through a standard
computer modem. Using the Terminal mode, the user calls t he Switchboard
System Bypass Module (SSBM) to perfor m basic monitoring. In the event of a
SSBM alarm or notice, t he user is notified at the remote location. The SSBM calls,
through the modem, to the user’s computer or pager and leaves a message.
Remote Notification is an extension of the Terminal mode with the additional
support algorithms necessary t o control an external modem (refer to Chapter 13,
“Serial Communications”). Connection to the SSBM is made when a user calls the
SSBM on the phone. The user has exactly the same capabilities a s if using a
terminal connected directly to the SSBM RS---232 port. Remote Notification differs
from the basic Terminal mode with the addition of Call Answer, Call Out, and
Housekeeping functions. The Call Answer function all ows the user to call into t he
S SBM from a remote location and enter Terminal mode. The Call Out function
allows the SSBM to be configured to call either a remote computer or numeric
pagingserviceoverthephoneline. CallOutallowstheSSBMtocallaremote
computer and leave a one-line descriptive message of the alarm or notice
condition. Numeric paging support allows the SSBM to call a paging service and
send numeric messages. The Housekeeping function maintains the link between
the SSBM and modem.
