TheSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)was
designedtoallowremotemanagementandmonitoringofa
varietyofdevicesfromacentrallocation.TheSNMP
managementsystemisgenerallycomposedofagents(suchas
yourRaven,arouter,aUPS,awebserver,afileserver,orother
computerequipment)and
aNetworkManagementStation
(NMS)whichmonitorsalltheagentsonaspecificnetwork.
Usingthemanagementinformationbase(MIB),anNMScan
includereporting,networktopologymapping,toolstoallow
trafficmonitoringandtrendanalysis,anddevicemonitoring.
AuthenticationensuresSNMPmessagescomingfromthe
agent,suchastheRaven,havenotbeenmodifiedandthe
agentmaynotbequeriedbyunauthorizedusers.SNMPv3
usesaUser‐BasedSecurityModel(USM)toauthenticateand,
ifdesiredorsupported,messageencryption. USMusesauser
nameandpasswordspecific
toeachdevice.
TheRavencanbeconfiguredasanSNMPagentandsupports
SNMPv2candSNMPv3.
Management Information Base (MIB)
Themanagementinformationbase(MIB)isatypeofdatabase
usedtocompiletheinformationfromthevariousSNMP
agents.Reportsfromvariousagents,suchastheRaven,are
sentasdatainformdesignedtobeparsedbytheNMSintoits
MIB.Thedataishierarchicalwithentriesaddressed
through
objectidentifiers.
SNMP Traps
SNMPtrapsarealertsthatcanbesentfromthemanaged
devicetotheNetworkManagementStationwhenanevent

whenthenetworkconnectionbecomesavailable.
