IBM 71453RU Server User Manual

Note: To remove an internal removable flash memory drive, push down on the
locking collar to unlock the drive before you remove the drive.
6. Reinstall the power supply (see Installing a hot-swap power supply) and
reconnect the power cable.
7. (IBM Business Partners only) Restart the server. Confirm that it starts correctly
and recognizes the newly installed devices, and make sure that no error LEDs
are lit.
8. (IBM Business Partners only) Complete the additional steps in “Instructions for
IBM Business Partners” on page 29.
Memory modules
The following notes describe the types of dual inline memory modules (DIMMs)
that the server supports and other information that you must consider when you
install DIMMs:
v To confirm that the server supports the memory modules that you are installing,
see http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/.
v All server model types support 1.5 V, and model types 7143 and 7191 also
support 1.35 V, 240-pin, 2 GB PC3-10600 or 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB PC3-8500
double data-rate (DDR) III, registered synchronous dynamic random-access
memory (SDRAM) with error correcting code (ECC) DIMMs. Model types 7145
and 7146 also support 1 GB DIMMs and model Types 7143 and 7191 also
support 32 GB DIMMs. These DIMMs must be compatible with the latest
PC3-10600 or PC3-8500 SDRAM Registered DIMM specifications.
v The server supports up to eight memory cards. Each memory card holds up to
eight DIMMs.
v At least one memory card with one pair of DIMMs must be installed for the
server to operate.
v The Intel 7500 Scalable Memory Buffer and the Intel 7510 Scalable Memory
Buffer are not interchangeable and cannot be used in the same server. Check the
label on the top of the memory card and then see http://www-03.ibm.com/
systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ to verify that the memory
card you are installing is supported in the server.
v The server supports an additional 512 GB of memory when the 32-DIMM
optional IBM MAX5 for System x memory expansion module is attached to the
server. An additional 1 TB of memory is supported when 32 GB DIMMs are
installed in model types 7143 and 7191.
v When you install additional DIMMs on a memory card, be sure to install them
in pairs. The DIMMs in each pair must match each other.
v The server supports memory sparing. Memory sparing reserves memory
capacity for failover in the event of a DIMM failure, and the reserved capacity is
subtracted from the total available memory. Memory sparing provides less
redundancy than memory mirroring does. If a predetermined threshold of
correctable errors is reached, the contents of the failing DIMM are copied to the
spare memory, and the failing DIMM or rank is disabled. To enable memory
sparing through the Setup utility, select System Settings > Memory. (Memory
sparing and memory mirroring cannot be used at the same time.)
v You do not have to save new configuration information to the IMM when you
install or remove DIMMs. The only exception is if you replace a DIMM that was
designated as disabled in the Setup utility Memory Settings menu. In this case,
you must re-enable the row in the Setup utility or reload the default memory
settings.
