WhenusingyourprinterwithanIBMPC,PC-XT,orPC-ATor compatible,
youwillprobablybeusingPC-DOSorMS-DOSasanoperatingsystem.A
numberof softwaretricksmaybe usefidhere.Thischapterisnot,however,
a substitutefortheoperatingsystemmanualssuppliedwithyourcomputer.
To learnhowto printffles,etc.it is best to readtherelevantpartsof these
manuals.
INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARE WITH
YOUR PRINTER
Wheninstallingapplicationsoftware,youmayfindthatyourprinteris not
specificallymentionedin the listsof pnntemgivenfor installation.How-
ever, this should pose no problem. Read this section, and guidelines
providedwith yoursoftwareon printerinstallation.
Ifyouhaveyourprintersetup in standardmode,thenchooseanEpsonFX-
1050or EX-1OOOas yourprinterto be selected.
If neitherofthesea~ mentioned,chooseone of the following(in orderof
preference):StarNR-10/15,StarND-10/15,EpsonFX86e,EpsonFX286e.
If you haveyourprintersetup with the DIP switchesto emulatean IBM
PropnnterXL, simplychoosethis fromthelist of printerxavailablein the
applicationsoftwarelist.
If theIBMProprinterXLis notmentioned,useProprinterII orPropnnter.
Ifyoursoftwarepackagedoesnotmentionpnntembyname,butasksinstead
what featuresyourprinteris capableof, the mostcommonquestionsare:
“Canyourprinterperforma backspace?”and “Canit do a hardwareform
feed?”.Youshouldanswer“Yes”to boththesequestions.
Other softwarepackagesmay well allowyou to install specificfeatures.
Spreadsheetprogramswilloftenaskforthemaximumnumberof columns
to be printed.This is givenbelow.
