MS-DOS AND YOUR PRINTER
WhenusingyourprinterwithanIBMPC,PC-XT,orPC-ATorcompatible,
youwillprobablybeusingPC-DOSorMS-DOSas anoperatingsystem.A
numberofsoftwaretricksmaybe usefulhere.Thischapteris not,however,
a substitutefortheoperatingsystemmanualssuppliedwithyourcomputer.
To learnhowto printfiles,etc.it is best to readthe relevantparts of these
manuals.
INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARE WITH
YOUR PRINTER
Wheninstallingapplicationsoftware,youmayfindthatyourprinteris not
specificallymentionedin the lists of printersgivenfor installation.How-
ever, this should pose no problem. Read this section, and guidelines
providedwithyoursoftwa~ on printerinstallation.
If youhaveyourprintersetup instandardmode,thenchooseanEpsonLX-
850as yourprinterto be selected.
Ifthisisnotmentioned,chooseoneofthefollowing(inorderofpreference):
StarNX-1000/LC-10,StarND-10/15,EpsonFX86e,EpsonFX286e.
If you have yourprintersetup with the DIP switchesto emulatean IBM
ProprinterIII, simplychoosethisfromthe list of printersavailablein the
applicationsoftwarelist.
If theIBMProprinterIII is notmentioned,use PmprinterII or Pmprinter.
Ifyoursoftwaxepackagedoesnotmentionprintersbyname,butasksinstead
whatfeaturesyourprinteris capableof, themost commonquestionsare:
“Canyourprinterperforma backspace?”and “Canit do a hardwareform
feed?”.You shouldanswer“Yes”to boththesequestions.
Other softwarepackagesmay well allowyou to installspecificfeatures.
Spreadsheetprogramswilloftenask forthemaximumnumberof columns
to beprinted.This is givenbelow.
