112 Troubleshooting Your System

If you have a SAS RAID controller, ensure that the following components are properly installed and
connected:
Memory module
RAID battery

Verify that the cable connections between the backplane and the SAS controller are correct. See "SAS
Backplane (Service-Only Procedure)" on page 87.

Close the system. See "Opening and Closing the System" on page 46.

Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet, and turn on the system and attached peripherals. If the
problem persists, proceed as follows:
If you have a SAS controller,
see "Getting Help" on page 129.
If you have a RAID controller, replace the RAID battery
.
See "Installing the SAS RAID Controller
Card Battery" on page 76. If replacing the battery does not solve the problem,
see "Getting Help"
on page 129.
Troubleshooting an External SAS Tape Drive
Problem
Defective tape drive
Defective tape cartridge
Missing or corrupted tape-backup software or tape drive device driver
Defective SAS controller
Action

Remove the tape cartridge you were using when the problem occurred, and replace it with a tape
cartridge that you know works.

Ensure that the device drivers for the tape drive are installed and are configured correctly.

Run the appropriate online diagnostics tests. See "Using Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics" on page 117.

Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.
CAUTION: Only trained service technicians are authorized to remove the system cover and access any of the
components inside the system. Before performing any procedure, see your Product Information Guide for
complete information about safety precautions, working inside the computer and protecting against electrostatic
discharge.

Open the system. See "Opening and Closing the System" on page 46.

Ensure that the controller card is firmly seated in its connector on the system board.
