Veryfewcomputemstillsendjust sevenbitsto theirprinters,the waythe
AppleII+ andTRS-80did.Butif youfindyourselfin thissituationallis
notlost.YoucanstillgainaccesstothesymbolsintheupperhalfoftheFX-
850symbolset(eitheritalicsorcharactergraphics)withthefollowingthree
commands.
Thesecommandscontrolthestateof theeighthbit,the high-orderor most
signijlcanfbit, which is the leftmostbit in a binary string.None of the
commandswillaffectdatasentas graphics.
Tomaketheeighthbitalwayson(l), whichletsyouprintitalicsorcharacter
graphics,sendthiscommand:

To keep the eighthbit alwaysoff (0), so you can onlyprint the ordinary
ASCIIcharactersin the lowerhalfof the symbolset, sendthis:

5.5.6 Spacing
Whenyou combineproportionalspacingwith automaticjustificationyou
get text that looks like that in professionallytypesetbooks.Proportional
spacingalsolooksgoodwithoutjustification.
A couple of notes though:The proportionalspacing commandcan not
change a monospaced-pitchfont into a proportionallyspaced one. You
shouldalwayshaveaproportionallyspacedfontselectedwhenyousendthis
command.Also,youcan’tcondenseproportionallyspacedtext.
To turnproportionalprintingon or off, sendthiscommand:

inwhichif nis anevennumbersuchas2or4 yougetproportionalprinting,
andifnisanoddnumbersuchas 1or3yougetthelast-selectedmonospaced
pitch.
