It’s actuallyprettyeasy.Flippingthroughandsettingparametersfromthe
panelis describedin detailin theStarL.userPrinter4 OperationsManual.
Basically,allyoudo is pressthe [ < ] or [ > ] buttonsto scrollthroughthe
sequenceof possibleparametersandvalues,whichis clearlyshownon the
paneldisplay.Youpress[v ]whenyouwanttogodownandscrollthrough
a lower menulevel. And you also press [
v ] when you want to save a
particularmenuitemas thevaluefor a currentparametersetting.
SETPOWER-UPenablesyouto savenewsettingsina permanentmemory
calledEEPROM.The newsettingscanbe storedeven whenthe poweris
turnedoff.Thefinalmenu(LOADFACTORYSET)isusedwhenyouwant
to startfromthebeginning,withthe originalfactorysettings.
2.2 CONTROLLINGTHE PRINTER
In thissectionyou’llmeettwo separatecontrolsoverhowthe StarLaser-
Printer4 itself works.The INTERFACEparametercontrolscommunica-
tions between the printer and your computer. And the EMULATION
parameterdetermines,amongother things, which set of commandsthe
printerwilluse. Youcan settheseINTERFACEandEMULATIONpara-
meterson the controlpanel.
2.2.1 TheINTERFACEparameter
The INTERFACEparameter,the most basicof the Star LaserPrinter4’s
configurationsettings,defineshowyourcomputerconnectsto theprinter.
You can set the INTERFACEto eitherSerialor Parallel.In mostsingle-
computetenvironrnentsyou’lloptforthefasterParallelinterface;inamulti-
usernetworkyoumaybe betteroff withSerial.
Theparticularprinterinterfacesettingsdon’tmatterasmuchasmakingsure
theymatchthoseon yourcomputer.If youuse anMS-DOScomputer,you
can set yourcomputer’sparameterswith the MODEcommand.See your
MS-DOSmanual.
MostMS-DOSand AT-compatiblecompute~supportup to threeparallel
andtwo serialports,whichcomeon expansionboardsyouplug into your
computer.Whenyouinstallsuchboardsyoumustsetswitchesto indicate
thenumberandaddressesoftheseports.Ifyouspecifythewrongaddresses,
youwon’tbe ableto print.
