3.2.1 Bit-mappedfonts
StarMicronicshasearnedareputationforattractive,well-designedfontson
its printers,andthislaserprintercontinuesthetradition.
TheStarLaserPrinter4 usesbit-mappedfonts.Eachcharacters madeup
of a patternor “map”of dots,just likecharacterson a dot-matrixprinteror
on yourcomputerscreen.Resolutionmakesthedifference:to makeeach
characterthe StarLaserPrinter4 usesten ortwentytimesasmanydotsas
a dot-matrixprinteror computerscreendoes.
Everysizeofprintyouwant,pluseveryitalicorboldfacevecsion,hasitsown
bit mapand is normallyconsidereda separatefont.It takesa gooddealof
printermemoryto hold allthefontsyoumightwantat anygivenmoment.
Star Las&Pnnter4 fonts can be groupedinto three categories:internal,
cartridge,and downloadablefonts.
3.2.2 Internalfonts
TheStarLaserPrinter4 hassevenbuilt-ininternulfontsthatresideperma-
nentlyin its read-onlymemory(ROM).That’swhy theseare sometimes
called“residentfonts”:

Withthesemost frequentlyused fontsin ROM, a pagecan be assembled
muchfasterthanifthefontshadtobeloadedintotheprinterforeachprinting
job.
