Attribute byte 1 specifies the character type and additional information.

no expansion. Normal ascender/descender character
based on bit 7.

line-drawing character. The dots in row 8 are extended downward
through rows 9, 10, 11, and 12. Bit 7 is
ignored. Use this mode to create characters
similar to resident font characters 179 to
223.

shading character. The dots in rows 1, 2, 3, and 4 are repeated
as rows 9, 10, 11, and 12. NLQ mode is
ignored. Use this mode to create characters
similar to resident font characters 176 to
178.
