HP Data Protector Tape Offload – Worked Examples
HP Data Protector has an extensive range of Copy processes. Here we will look at how to offload both D2D
Virtual Tape Libraries and D2D NAS shares to physical tape. Similar processes to this exist for all the major
backup applications.
A note on terminology
Media Copy – this is a byte by byte copy but can be wasteful of physical tape media as appending and
consolidation is not possible. For example: a D2D virtual tape library with 50GB of data on it when “media
copied” to an LTO5 piece of media only occupies 50GB of the LTO5’s 1.5TB capacity. No other data can be
added to the LTO5 media.
Object Copy – this is the copy of a particular host backup or particular data set on a host.
Sessions – A backup session is a collection of all the backup jobs that run under an overarching policy
HP Data Protector allows copies using a variety of identifiers. The copies can also be done:-
Interactively – on a one off basis
Immediately after a backup finishes
Scheduled to occur at a specific time. (This is the preferred option for D2D copies to physical tape.)
