Most P2P programs allow the default ports to be changed. Some other handy port forwards to
know are:
Edonkey 2000
TCP port 4661 to connect to the server.
TCP port 4662 to connect to other clients.
UDP port 4665 to send messages to servers other then the one you are connected to.
Bit Torrent
TCP/UDP port 6881 to allow client to client connections (primary)
Note: Ports 6882 - 6889 are tried if 6881 doesn't work so you may want to forward those as
well.
MSN messenger
TCP/UDP port 6901 to allow incoming voice from computer to computer
UDP ports 6801, 6901, 2001 - 2120 to allow VoIP phone to Computer communication
TCP ports 6891 - 6900 to allow file transfers via MSN messenger.
Note: For general messaging it is usually not nessesary to make port forward rules in
order to use MSN messenger over a Router.
Note: The"File transfer" ports suggested are so that you can perform 10 file transfer
operations at a time. If you open only one of these ports (for example, if you only
open port 6891), you can only transfer one file at a time.
How do you set up Firewalling correctly on a router?
Most NetComm Active Firewall devices have a very simple enable / disable option that make it
very easy for the end user to choose how much security they need or to test if the firewall is
blocking access.
■ Active Firewall is one that uses Denial of Service (DoS) and or Stateful Packet Inspection
(SPI)
■ Denial of Service (DoS) prevention will selectively ignore packets fitting a certain criteria
after it learns that its an attack. This is to prevent some one flooding your connection to
prevent data flowing in or out of it.
■ Stateful packet inspection, SPI examines the packet to see if it is legitimate before forwarding
it on.
