assigned a binary number, covering 128 possible characters. It is
used for information interchange among data processing

application Use to which a computer program or system is put, for example,
sorting employee records.
applications software Host- or LPS-resident software that directs the computer to
perform specific tasks or functions as opposed to the software
used to operate the computer. Common business applications
include payroll, accounting, and inventory.
asynchronous Transmission in data communications controlled by start and stop
elements at the beginning and end of each character. Thus, time
intervals between transmitted characters may be unequal in
length.
