Error messages
This section lists common error messages that may be displayed on the
monitor. These messages often indicate procedural errors such as an
incorrect keystroke or a write-protected disk. Some messages, however,
may indicate a problem that requires you to consult the troubleshooting
section of this manual.
Error Message Solutions
Access denied. Try saving to a new file or disk.
Move the write-protect tab over the hole on
the back of the disk.
Bad command or file
name.
Make certain you entered the right command.
Verify the specified drive and try it again.
If you are trying to exit MS-DOS to return to
Windows, type and press
E
NTER
.
Base memory [xxx]
expansion.
This is an informational message only. No
action is required.
Checking RAM on disk
controller.
Your BIOS configuration is incorrect. Enter
BIOS Setup and verify the parameter values.
CD-ROM is not
recognized.
See “The system does not recognize the
CD-ROM drive.” on page 79.
Data error. Run ScanDisk on the reported disk.
Decreasing available
memory.
Your BIOS configuration is incorrect. Enter
BIOS Setup and verify the parameter values.
Diskette drive is not
recognized.
See “The diskette drive is not recognized by
the system.” on page 82.
Diskette drive 0 seek to
track 0 failed.
Enter BIOS Setup and verify the diskette drive
parameters.
Check the diskette drive cables. Make certain
pin 1 on the cable aligns with pin 1 on the
connector.
Diskette drive reset failed. Enter BIOS Setup and verify the diskette drive
parameters.
Check the diskette drive cables. Make certain
pin 1 on the cable aligns with pin 1 on the
connector.
Diskette read failed - strike

to retry boot.
Make certain the boot diskette contains the
command.com file.
Use the configuration utility (if applicable) to
verify the drive or controller configuration.
Press
F1
to try the boot again.
