Chapter 3. Planning 97
3.5.4 Microsoft Windows .NET Server
Microsoft is adding “NUMA enhanced” CPU-affinity code and Hyper-Threading
optimization to maximize the performance of XpandOnDemand NUMA-based
servers such as the x440.
Windows .NET Server operating systems will understand the concept of physical
processors versus logical processors. In the case of Windows .NET Server, only
physical processors will count against the license limit. Although a Windows
.NET Standard Server (limited to two processors) running on a two-way system
with Hyper-Threading enabled will recognize and utilize the processing
capabilities of four logical processors, only two physical processors will be
counted for licensing purposes.
3.5.5 Novell NetWare
IBM is working with Novell's NetWare technology team (NetWare V6.0 and
Modesto 32/64-bit) and its one Net strategy to take full advantage of the
capabilities of IBM Enterprise X-Architecture technology. Novell will support high
scalability (32 processors x 32 nodes per cluster), large memory (64 GB), Active
PCI-X hot swap/hot-add, the Xeon Processor MP (including Hyper-Threading
and xAPIC), non-uniform memory addressing (NUMA), Remote I/O, and system
partitioning (static and dynamic) in all forms. Support for many of these
technologies exists today, with others to be added in future support packs or
operating system updates.
Refer to 4.3.3, “NetWare installation” on page 121 for more detailed information
on installing NetWare on the x440.
3.5.6 Red Hat/SuSE Linux
Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 and SuSE Linux Professional 8.0 are
architected to exploit the capabilities of the x440 server, including the support for
Hyper-Threading technology. The most recent version of the Linux 2.4.x kernel
scales effectively to four-way and eight-way, although results vary depending on
the workload and the scalability of the application.
Important: Once supported multi-node configurations must be assembled
before installing NetWare. Novell doesn’t currently support adding chassis
after NetWare is installed.
