Chapter 5. Management
IBM Director is the systems management software provided with the
IBM ^ xSeries servers. This chapter covers the three plug-ins to IBM
Director unique to IBM that are of particular relevance to the x440:
5.1, “Active PCI Manager” on page 130
Active PCI Manager guides you when installing new PCI adapters and can
analyze an existing PCI configuration and suggest changes to improve
performance. Works with x440 internal slots and RXE-100 slots.
5.2, “System Partition Manager” on page 150
System Partition Manager is used to physically partition an x440 complex (for
example a 16-way) so that each partition behaves as an independent server.
5.3, “Process Control” on page 155
Process Control can help improve performance both for the server overall and
for application users in general. Application vendors have no incentive to
impose restrictions on their software. One application may have its priority set
unnecessarily high, to the detriment of all other applications, or two
applications may each try to use all available memory, causing contention.
These types of ill-behaved applications make it virtually impossible to run
many applications concurrently on a conventional server. By preventing
resource-intensive applications from dominating server resources, IBM
provides the means for application consolidation.
