Varnish A finishing process in which a coating, or varnish, is applied over the
printed area (or whole page) to protect it or enhance its visual appeal.
Vector An image file that uses mathematical formulae to describe lines and
curves.
Versioning A form of variable information printing. Several versions of a document
are created based on certain target criteria (such as demographics or
purchase history). Document appears personalised but is identical to
that produced for other recipients with the same profile. See
customisation, personalisation.
Vignette An image in which colours blend smoothly and gradually from one to
another (usually from a lighter tone to a darker tone).
VIPP Short for Variable-data Intelligent PostScript Printware. Xerox software
for printing variable data.
VPS Short for Variable Print Specification. A variable print file format.
Web press A printing press, either digital or offset, that prints on roll (or web) fed
paper.
Weight The weight of paper or stock, measured in gsm (grams per square
metre).
Work-and-tumble To print one side of a sheet of paper on an offset press, then turn it
over from gripper to back using the same side guide and plate to print
the second side.
Work-and-turn To print one side of a sheet of paper on an offset press, then turn it
over from left to right and print the second side using the same gripper
and plate but opposite side guide.
Wrinkles The uneven surface than can be caused by the drying of inks. Also,
paper creasing that occurs during printing.
Xerography Another term for electrophotography. Derived from Greek for “dry
writing” and associated with Xerox.
