3Com 5000 Switch User Manual

3-4 INSTALLING AND OPERATING THE MODULE
Module Overview The 24-Port module is a port-switching module. Essentially, this
enables users to assign a backplane segment (network) at the port level
of the module. This feature gives the user greater flexibility in both
workgroup creation and module configuration.
In addition, the CoreBuilder 5000 scalable network management
architecture enables users to add a CoreBuilder 5000 Ethernet
Network Monitor Card to the module. This card enables users to gather
network statistics for any of the CoreBuilder 5000 backplane segments.
Once attached to the 24-Port module, you must assign the monitor
card to the network on which you will gather statistics. Note that it is
possible to install the monitor card on either the 24-Port module or the
distributed management module for Ethernet (DMME). For more
information on network statistics, refer to the section Gathering
Statistics later in this chapter. For more information on the DMME, refer
to the Distributed Management Module User Guide.
The CoreBuilder 5000 Ethernet Network Monitor Card does not provide
per-port statistics for ONline modules when it is installed on the 24-Port
module. If, however, the card is installed on the DMM-EC, it is possible
to collect per-port statistics for ONline modules.
Setting the DIP
Switches
The 24-Port module has an eight-position DIP switch located on the
module. This switch lets you perform the following:
Select a network channel for all 24 ports on the 24-Port module
Configure all 24 ports of the module into one workgroup or module
segment
Choose the primary module configuration – Non-volatile RAM
configuration (software configuration) or DIP Segment selection
(DIP-specified module configuration)
It is not possible, using the DIP switches on the 24-Port module, to
assign ports to different networks.
