Changing passwords
It is strongly recommended to change the default passwords set at the factory. It is also a good
practice to change the passwords on a regular basis. Change passwords for the HMC, AIX
operating system, and the IBM System Storage Archive Manager users:
HMC
For the HMC change the predefined hscroot password to restrict access, change the predefined
hscroot password immediately. To change the predefined hscroot password, do the following:
In the Navigation Area (the area on the left side of the screen), click the HMC Users icon.
In the HMC Management: HMC Users area (the area on the right side of the screen), click
on Manage HMC Users and Access.
Select hscroot so that the User ID is highlighted. Click on User and then click on Modify.
Fill in the new password in the Password field and in the Confirm password field, then
click OK.
Click User and then click Exit.
The HMC is shipped with a predefined root-user password. The root-user ID and password cannot
be used to log in to the console. However, the root-user ID and password are needed to perform
some maintenance procedures. To control access to the HMC, do the following:
In the Navigation Area (the area on the left side of the screen), click the HMC Users icon.
In the HMC Management: HMC Users area (the area on the right side of the screen), click
on Manage HMC Users and Access.
Select root so that the User ID is highlighted. Click on User and then click on Modify.
Fill in the new password in the Password field and in the Confirm password field, and then
click OK.
Click User and then click Exit.
AIX
For the AIX operating system (for both IBM eServer p5 520 servers) you should change the
passwords for all four preconfigured system accounts (dr550, dr550adm, ibmce, and root). Because
of AIX security restrictions with the Data Retention 550, the most convenient way to change
passwords is to log in with the user whose password you want to change, and then change the
password; root is allowed to change passwords for other users but then these users are forced to
change their password again the next time they log in.
Therefore, the procedure for every distinct user account is:
Use the management console to access the first IBM eServer p5 520 (use PrtSc button,
select Engine1 on Port 01 from the panel, press Enter)
o Login to AIX using the dr550 user with the appropriate password.
o Change the password of dr550 with the AIX command passwd. Follow the instructions
on the screen.
o Switch to the root user ID and his environment with the AIX command su - root and
provide root’s password.
o Change the password of root with the AIX command passwd. Follow the instructions on
the screen.
o Switch to the dr550adm user ID and his environment with the AIX command su -
dr550adm.
