Chapter 3
Basic Operation
Overview
There are various convenient methods to access the computers: manual,
hotkey, IR remote control, and the On-Screen Display (OSD). Manual
operation involves pressing the Mode and port selection pushbuttons located
on the unit’s front panel. This is discussed in this chapter, as well as the LED
Displays, Display Modes, and so on.
Hotkey operation, which involves entering combinations from the keyboard, is
discussed in Chapter 4. Port switching via remote control and the OSD are
discussed in Chapter 5.
Port ID Numbering
Each KVM port on the CM1164 switch is assigned a port number (1, 2, 3, and
4). The port numbers are marked on the rear panel of the switch.
The Port ID of a computer is derived from the KVM port number to which it is
connected. For example, a computer connected to KVM port 2 has a Port ID of
2.
Note: The Port ID is also used to specify which computer gets the KVM, USB
peripheral, and audio focus with the Hotkey port selection method (see
Auto Scanning, page 30 for details).
The Port ID may or may not correspond to the Channel ID. The Channel ID
refers to the frame position on the display device, depending on the Display
Mode. See Display Modes, page 18 and Channel ID, page 21 for more details.
