Multishelf System Components

Control Network (Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switch)
A Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switch (WS-C6509-NEB-A) provides the control network for the multishelf
system control traffic. The Cat6509 switch is connected to the LCCs and FCCs. The following list
describes the requirements for the Cat6509:
• Although the multishelf system can operate with a single Cat6509 switch, we strongly recommend
that you use two switches for redundancy.
Note If you operate the multishelf system with only a single Cat6509 switch, any failure of the
Cat6509 leaves the multishelf system without a control network.
• Each Cat6509 switch requires an SUP720 supervisor controller module and must be running the
following operating system software:
• Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(14r)S9 or later
