Chapter 3 Multishelf System Planning
Multishelf System Components
System Bootstrap (ROMMON), Version 1.3 or later
BOOTLDR: s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-PSV-M), Version 12.2(17d)SXB7
Consider the length of the cables needed to connect each Cat6509 switch to the fabric card chassis
and both line card chassis.
See the “Planning the System Management Network (Cat6509)” section on page 3-10 for information
about the things to consider for the system management network of your multishelf system.
Control Network (22-Port SCGE Card)
A 22-port SCGE card (SC-GE-22=) provides the control network for the multishelf system. The 22-port
SCGE card is connected to the RPs in LCCs. The following list describes the requirements for the
22-port SCGE card:
Although the multishelf system can operate with a single 22-port SCGE card, we strongly
recommend that you use two cards for redundancy.
Note If you operate the multishelf system with only a single 22-port SCGE card, any failure of
the card leaves the multishelf system without a control network.
Each 22-port SCGE card must be running the following operating system software:
Cisco IOS XR Software Release 3.4.1 or later
System Bootstrap (ROMMON), Version 1.43 or later
Consider the length of the cables needed to connect each 22-port SCGE card to the RPs in the line
card chassis.
See the “Planning the System Management Network (22-Port SCGE Cards)” section on page 3-12 for
information about the things to consider for the system management network of your multishelf system.
Note Cisco Catalyst switches and the 2-port SCGE cards are eliminated if the fabric card chassis is equipped
with 22-port SCGE cards.
System Console
The system console is the computer or terminal at which you issue commands to configure the multishelf
system for operation. Following is a list of system console requirements:
Two system consoles are required for redundant system management operation.
A console connection is required for each route processor (RP), SCGE card (2-port or 22-port), and
Cat6509 switch (if so equipped). In addition, if your system contains optional distributed route
processors (DRPs), each DRP PLIM requires two console connections, one for each of the
processors on the DRP.
Note The console port does not support modem control or hardware flow control. The port
requires a straight-through EIA/TIA-232 cable (RJ-45 connector).
In addition, RPs and DRPs (line card chassis) and SCGE cards (2-port or 22-port) have AUX ports,
which Cisco TAC engineers use for troubleshooting.
