Planning the System Management Network
(22-Port SCGE Cards)
The system management network provides a path for the control traffic that is used to configure and
manage the multishelf system. The multishelf system has two types of control networks:
In-band—(Control network) Consists of one or two 22-port SCGE cards (SC-GE-22=) installed in
the FCC and cabled to each LCC in the system (See Figure 3-4).
Out-of-band—Consists of console connections between each of the chassis and a system console,
which is typically connected to a terminal server.
Note For redundancy, we recommend two 22-Port SCGE cards installed in each FCC; otherwise, a single card
failure leaves the multishelf system with no in-band control network.

As you plan the control networks for your multishelf system, consider the following:
For the (in-band) control network, consider the following:
Each route processor (RP) in the multishelf system must be connected to the 22-port SCGE
cards in the FCC(s).
Any (optional) distributed route processors (DRPs) that are head of a logical router must also
be connected to both 22-Port SCGE cards.
For instructions on how to cable the 22-port SCGE cards, see the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing
System Multishelf System Interconnection and Cabling Guide.
