Planning the System Management Network (Cat6509)
The system management network provides a path for the control traffic that is used to configure and
manage the multishelf system. The multishelf system has two types of control networks:
• In-band—(Control network) Consists of one or two Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switches
(WS-C6509-NEB-A) cabled to each LCC and FCC in the system (See Figure 3-3).
• Out-of-band—Consists of console connections between each of the chassis and a system console,
which is typically connected to a terminal server.
Note For redundancy, we recommend two Cat6509 switches; otherwise, a switch failure leaves the multishelf
system with no in-band control network.
