Chapter 4 General Site Planning Considerations
Shipping and Receiving
Shipping and Receiving
The line card chassis (LCCs) and fabric card chassis (FCCs) that make up the multishelf system are
shipped in several crates and pallets. Complete information is located in the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier
Routing System 16-Slot Line Card Chassis Unpacking, Moving, and Securing Guide and the
Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System 16-Slot Fabric Card Chassis Unpacking, Moving, and Securing
Guide. Consider the following as you plan for the shipping and receiving of system components:
Caution Do not stack the shipping crates, as serious damage to the Cisco CRS-1 system components can occur.
Your multishelf system shipment might include 15 or more shipping crates and pallets. Make sure
that enough room exists at the loading dock or installation site to unpack the system components.
If you plan to store the components before installation, make sure that you have an area large enough
in which to store the system components. Note that you should store components in their shipping
crates until you are ready to install them.
Will you unpack the chassis components from their shipping crates at the loading dock or
installation site? Consider the following:
Are corridors and aisles from the loading dock to the installation site wide enough to transport
the chassis and components in their crates?
If you plan to unpack the shipping crates at the loading dock, make sure that the area is dry so
that the equipment does not get wet. In addition, make sure that there is enough room for the
chassis components and the shipping crates.
If you plan to use the Cisco-supplied dolly to transport the chassis to the installation site, you
must unpack the chassis to attach the dolly.
If aisles are not wide, you might want to unpack components at the loading dock.
Is there enough room at the installation site to unpack chassis components? If not, can system
components be unpacked at the loading dock?
Review the information in the next section (“Transport to the Installation Site”) to help you
decide whether to unpack the components before moving them to the installation room.
Will enough personnel be available to help move the system components to the installation room?
We recommend a minimum of two people to move the chassis and a minimum of four people to
move the chassis on a ramp.
Will enough personnel be available on the installation day to install and cable the multishelf system?
For information about the size, weight, and contents of chassis shipping crates, see the site planning
guides for the fabric and line card chassis (see Preface for a list of documents).
