How to Clean a Digital Video Disc
(DVD)
Before You Begin
The following procedure applies equally well to DVDs and to CDs. Eject the DVD or
CD and remove it from the tray; see:
“How to Eject a Digital Video Disc (DVD) With Software Commands” on
page 141
“How to Eject a Digital Video Disc (DVD) Manually” on page 143
Note If the drive cannot read a disc, you may have a dusty or dirty disc.
What to Do
1. Clean the disc with compressed air.
Compressed air can remove most accumulations of dust and large dirt particles. If
you have access to the drive’s read-head, verify it is dust free also.
2. If spraying with compressed air fails to remove the dirt on a disc, wipe the disc
using a soft, clean, lint-free, dry cloth.
Wipe the data areas of the disc (on both sides if necessary) radially from the center
to the outside.
Do not wipe in a circular motion.
Wipe only the affected areas of the disc.
