Safety Considerations
Before performing any installation or break/fix procedures involving
disassembly/re-assembly, all safety precautions should be observed.
Turn off the server and any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the server and any attached peripherals from AC power
sources.
Disconnect any telephone or telecommunications lines from the server.
Many of the server’s internal components are subject to ESD damage. Dell
recommends that you use a wrist grounding strap and mat when working
inside any computer system.
Flea Power
Many Dell products should be completely unplugged before opening the
case because of “Flea Power.” Systems that incorporate Flea Power are
essentially powered, even when apparently turned off. The internal power
allows the systems to be remotely turned on (wake on LAN), suspended
into a “sleep” mode, and have other advanced power management
features.
Techniques similar to a Flea Power are commonly used in modern remote-
controlled electronic devices (televisions, VCRs, etc.).
After unplugging the system, allow the charge to drain from the circuits by
waiting approximately 30 to 45 seconds before removing components.
All of the Dell PowerEdge midnight gray (x5x0 series) srvers incorporate
Flea Power.
ESD
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a major concern when handling
components, especially expansion cards and the system board. Very slight
charges can damage circuits in ways that may not be obvious. Intermittent
problems or a shortened product lifespan can also result.
Static electricity can harm delicate components inside your computer. To
prevent static damage, use a wrist grounding strap. If a strap is not
available, then discharge static electricity from your body before you
touch any of your computer’s electronic components, such as the
microprocessor. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface on
the computer chassis.
As you continue to work inside the computer, periodically touch an
unpainted metal surface to remove any static charge your body may have
accumulated. In addition to the preceding precautions, you can also take
the following steps to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge:
