Data scrambled Verify that the character format (data bits, parity, and stop bits) is set to the
same value in both modems.
Missing data during a transfer Verify that you are using the same method of flow control for both the modem
and the DTE.
If using XON/XOFF flow control, verify that the modem’s parity matches the
DTE’s parity.

Leased-Line Operation
Symptom Action
Modems do not train-up on leased lines Verify that the correct cabling is used for your application. Refer to Chapter 2,
Installation.
Verify that one modem is configured for Answer mode and the other is
configured for Originate mode.
Verify that both modems are using the same modulation scheme.
Verify that modems are configured for the appropriate leased-line mode. For
example, if you have a 4-wire leased line, then the modems must be
configured for 4-wire operation.
Modems are configured for dial backup,
but do not switch to dial lines if leased
lines fail
Verify that both modems have the Auto Dial Backup configuration option
enabled.

Verify that the correct telephone number for the remote modem is stored in
directory location 1.
Verify that one modem has the Auto Dial Backup configuration option set for
Disable and the other has it set to Enable.

Verify that the Auto Dial Standby configuration option is enabled.
