YourcomputerincludesanIDEharddrive.TheIDEharddrivecan
storethedataandprogramsyourcomputeruses.
Althoughthestoragecapacityofharddrivesvariesaccordingtomodel,
anyharddriveholdsmuchmorethanafloppydiskdoes.Also,the
computerreadsandworkswithaharddrivemorerapidlythanwitha
floppydisk.
Onceinformationissavedonaharddrive,itremainsthereuntilitis
overwritten.Samsungharddriveheadsparkautomaticallywhenyou
turnoffyourcomputer.
Theharddrivethatcomeswithyourcomputer
hasalreadybeenformatted.Donotformatthe
harddrive.Doingsodestroysalldata
containedonthedrive.Ifyouneedtoformator
erasealldataonyourharddrive,refertothe
manualforyouroperatingsystem.
Thedriveinyourcomputerisdividedintopartitions.Eachpartitionis
2GBorlesssothatthepartitionscanusea16-bitfileallocationtable
(FAT-16).Thefileallocationtableenablesthepartitionstolocatefiles
anddirectories.Yourcomputerrecognizeseachpartitionasaseparate
drive,forexample,ifaharddrivehastwopartitions,theycouldbe
recognizedasdriveCanddriveD.
AlthoughWindows98canworkwithFAT-16orFAT-32(a32-bitfile
allocationtable),yourcomputerhasbeensuppliedwithFAT-16as
therearesoftwarecompatibilityissueswithFAT-32.Oldersoftware
thatyoumayhave(16-bitsoftware)mayrequireFAT-16torun.
SimilarlyWindowsNT4.0canuseFAT-16orNTFS(theWindows
NTfilesystem).ThereareutilitiesincludedwithWindows98and
WindowsNT4.0toconvertfromFAT-16toFAT-32orNTFS,seethe
documentationincludedwithyouroperatingsystemformore
information.
ItisnotpossibletoconvertfromFAT-32or
NTFStoFAT-16withoutreformattingyourhard
drive.
