Handling Tapes
Proper handling of tape catridges is essential to ensuring data integrity.
• Tape cartridges must be kept in a clean, dust-free environment. Store tape
cartridges in a sealed container when they are not loaded in the library.
• The individual tape case works for individual cartridges, and Spectra Logic’s
15-slot data cartridge magazine (DCM) with the dust cover installed works well
for storing multiple cartridges. (The Spectra Logic PackRack
™
magazine shelf is
very convenient for storing multiple DCMs.)
• Avoid abusive handling or dropping of tape cartridges. If a tape is inadvertently
dropped, inspect it for damage. The dust cover on the tape must be properly seated
or it could become stuck in the tape drive.
• Condition the tape catridge. Before use, the tape should be conditioned by
exposure to the operating environment for a time at least equal to the period
during which it has been out of the operating environment (up to a maximum of 24
hours).
Use the following operating conditions for optimal tape performance.
• Temperature: 41°F to 113°F (5°C to 45°C)
• Relative Humidity: 20 percent to 80 percent (non-condensing)
• Maximum Wet Bulb Temperature: 77°F (25°C)
Extreme changes in temperature and humidity should be avoided whenever possible.
