8 Using SNMP
SNMP
(Simple
Network
Management
Protocol)
is
a
communication
protocol designed
specifically
for
managing
devices
or
other
elements
on
a
network. Equipment
commonly
managed
with
SNMP
includes
switches,
routers
and
host computers.
SNMP
is
typically
used
to
configure
these
devices
for
proper operation
in
a
network
environment,
as
well
as
to
monitor
them
to
evaluate performance
or
detect
potential
problems.
To
access
this
IBP
from
a
network
management
station
using
SNMP,
follow these
steps:
1.
Install
an
SNMP
management
application
on
your
host
computer.
2.
Verify
that
the
management
station
and
IBP
are
configured
to
the
same IP
domain.
3. Configure
the
community
name
and
access
rights
for
network
management access
via
SNMP.
4.
To
receive
trap
messages
from
the
IBP,
you
must
specify
the
IP
address of
the
trap
managers,
associated
community
names,
and
trap
types
that
the IBP
will
generate.
5.
An
SNMP
management
station
can
configure
and
monitor
network
devices by
setting
or
reading
device
variables
specified
in
the
Management
Infor- mation
Base
(MIB).
The
key
MIB
groups
supported
by
this
IBP are
listed in
this
appendix.
To
monitor
device
status
or
modify
system
parameters
on
the
IBP
from
a network
management
system,
you
must
access
the
appropriate
MIB variables
via
your
SNMP
management
application.
