Soft Permanent Virtual Circuits
Soft PVCs (SPVCs) allow you to connect Centillion PVC end points (using the
same PVC encapsulation method) across a PNNI-routed ATM network without
having to configure PVCs at every intermediate switch in the path. With SPVCs,
you retain the dynamic nature of PNNI, along with PNNI’s path selecting and
rerouting features by connecting the PVC end stations with a virtual SVC
connection.
Although many large networks load balance multiple ATM links between
switches, some customers still extend their networks over a single link to a wiring
closet or a remote building within the campus. If LANE is not in use, the customer
must build a network of PVCs to interconnect the switches, ATM servers, and
routers. Soft PVCs allow the customer to create a link to the ingress ATM switch
port across multiple switches to the remote egress ATM switch.
