Conceptually, packets move from a station on an external ring through the bridge
port to the internal switching fabric (which LNM displays as a ring) and out
another bridge port to the destination station on another external ring
(Figure 1-25
).

Each port has two addresses. One is the burnt-in MAC address assigned at the
factory. The other is the locally administered version of the burnt-in MAC
address.
For example:
The address 000500082940 is the burnt-in MAC address.
The address 400500082940 is the locally administered version (40 in the first byte
indicates LAA format).
Both addresses are available for use by the port. By default, on a token ring MCP,
the MAC address of the switch (displayed in the Admin MAC field in the System
window of SpeedView) is in locally administered address (LAA) format.
