Recommendations and Tips
Combining the LEC function and LANE services on a switch reduces LE-ARP
traffic because the information is available to the switch’s LEC without
communicating over an ATM link.
All of the NSAP addresses for LEC, LES, BUS, and LECS must be unique. When
these components are within the same switch, uniqueness can be ensured by
making your changes in the End System Indicator (ESI), selector byte portion, or
both of the NSAP address, which are the last 7 bytes of the 20-byte NSAP.
SpeedView automatically creates unique LEC, LES, BUS, and LECS addresses.
If you are using the LECS function, configure the same ELAN name within both
the LECS and respective LES/BUS configuration windows. The ELAN name is
transmitted during both the configuration and the registration process and for
compatibility.
If you are supplying multiple LES/BUS addresses to a LANE virtual port, make
sure the ATM addresses you have provided are members of a defined, cooperating
LES/BUS group. Not doing so may lead to incorrect configuration or failure of a
LANE virtual port to establish connectivity. Do not identify more than one
cooperating LES/BUS pair for a particular ELAN on the same Centillion 50/100
or Model 5000BH switch.
If several switches have LANE virtual ports configured, it is best to configure
only a subset of these for LANE services. For example, even when using
redundant LES/BUSs, usually it is not necessary to configure more than two or
three switches for LANE services.
Remember to configure IISP routing tables or enable PNNI for all the switches
that have LANE virtual ports and/or LANE services configured. You must do this
so that switched virtual circuits may be signaled between the switches.
The standard image supports LANE and IISP and requires a minimum of 10 MB
of memory. The advanced image supports LANE, PNNI, and MPOA and requires
a minimum of 16 MB of memory. An ATM MCP with 26 MB of memory can
accommodate up to 32 LES/BUS instances. The maximum number of ATM ports
that can be configured with 26 MB of memory is 24 ports. LAN Network
Manager (LNM) configuration also requires a minimum of 26 MB of memory on
the ATM MCP.
