Ethernet Solutions
This section provides solutions for the following Ethernet network needs:
Giving a server a dedicated port (this page)
Segmenting an Ethernet LAN (this page)
Replacing bridges or routers (page 2-15
)
Concentrating LANs into a router (page 2-16
)
Replacing a LAN backbone (page 2-18
)
Giving a Server a Dedicated Port
Giving a server a dedicated port on the switch improves server response and
increases throughput capacity by containing broadcasts and lessening collisions.
Segmenting an Ethernet LAN
Excessive traffic on an Ethernet LAN slows response time to all stations.
Using the switch, you can segment a congested LAN to create multiple LANs,
thereby increasing the average bandwidth available to each device.
The example in Figure 2-11
gives users 1 through 6 dedicated Ethernet ports for
improved performance. The rest of the users are connected through a hub. This
example also applies to the Centillion 50 or Model 5000BH switch.
