Implementing LANE Services
You should have a fundamental understanding of the LANE standard and how a
LEC interacts with the LANE services (LECS, LES, and BUS) in order to
understand the implementation choices and trade-offs for LANE services on the
switch. Chapters 1 through 3 of the ATM LANE specification provide an
excellent overview of these concepts. The specification may be found at the ATM
Forum’s Web location.
The choices for implementing LANE services affect how you configure the
services and all the LECs participating in the network, CLC and LANE virtual
ports, and other ATM-attached devices such as VNRs and servers.
You have the following two choices:
Use a LAN emulation configuration server (LECS) and configure each LEC
in the network to do so.
Bypass the LECS by providing the specific LES/BUS address for the chosen
emulated LAN when configuring the LEC.
Using the LECS is easier; but if a failure occurs, it takes longer for the network to
reconfigure.
Using a LECS
Using a LECS as a first point of contact for the LAN emulation clients has some
advantages. Because the basic function of the LECS is to provide the LEC with
the appropriate ATM address of the LES/BUS for an ELAN, the LES/BUS ATM
address only needs to be configured in the LECS Configuration window. If the
LES/BUS address for an ELAN changes as a result of reconfiguration, only the
LECS must be reconfigured.
