Reducing the Number of Source Route Hops
Source routing imposes a hop-count limit on token ring topologies. The limit for
most installed equipment is seven hops; for certain new adapters, bridges, and
applications, it is 13 hops.
The switch reduces the number of source route hops by allowing you to group
multiple physical segments into a single virtual ring.
Figure 2-7
shows an example of grouping segments into a single virtual ring.
Figure 2-7. Reducing the Number of Source Route Hops
Each virtual ring in a source routed network appears as one ring with a single ring
number. Each virtual ring appears as a single subnet to a router.
With fewer hops, network performance improves for two reasons:
You can more freely segment congested rings.
You decrease latency with each hop you eliminate.
Note:
For 13 hops to be the limit, all devices in the route must support 13 as
the hop-count limit. This limit may inhibit your ability to segment congested
rings to improve performance.
