Installing the Controller and Drives
To install Adaptec RAID controller and drives:
1 If you have a low-profile controller and a low-profile computer
cabinet, replace the original full-height bracket with the low-
profile bracket supplied in Adaptec RAID controller kit. To
verify the form factor of your controller model, see Controller
Features on page 1-5.
2 Turn off your computer.
3 Ground yourself by touching the system chassis.
4 Unplug the power cord.
5 Open the system cabinet.
6 Select an available PCI slot as follows:
– Adaptec 2020ZCR—Use only a 3.3-V, ZCR-enabled slot.
– All other adapters—Use any PCI slot. You’ll get better
performance if you use a 64-bit slot.
7 Remove the slot cover from an available PCI bus slot.
8 Install the controller in the PCI slot and secure the controller
bracket to the chassis.
9 Connect the computer’s disk activity LED cable to the
appropriate connector on the controller. See Appendix G for the
location of this connector for your controller.
Ensure that the positive lead of the LED cable, usually a red
wire or a wire marked with a red stripe, is attached to pin 1 and
the negative lead, usually a black wire, is attached to pin 2.
10 Install and connect any internal drives using the appropriate
cable.
Note: If you are intending to build a RAID 5 as described in
Creating a Bootable RAID 5 Array on page 2-4, install at least
three drives.
11 Close the computer cabinet.
12 SCSI controllers only—Connect any external cables and drives to
the Adaptec SCSI RAID controller.
