characters per inch (CPI). The
number of alphanumeric characters
that fit into one inch of printed text.
coaxial cable. A cable that
consists of one conductor, usually a
small copper tube or wire, within and
insulated from another conductor of
larger diameter, usually copper
tubing or copper braid.
command. A request from a
terminal for the performance of an
operation or the execution of a
particular program.
continuous forms. A series of
connected paper forms that feed
continuously through a printing
device. The connection between the
forms is perforated to allow the user
to tear them apart.
Continuous Forms Device (F1). A
forms feed device that allows
printing of continuous forms in an
unattended mode of operation.
cut forms. A single form, not
connected to other forms. The form
may have more than one part; that
is, it may have an original and one
or more copies.

data bits. The number of data bits
sent in each transmission frame
using the serial interface.
data stream. Print data and control
information flowing from host system
(computer) to the printer, from
beginning to end without interruption.
Document Insertion Device (F3).
A forms device used for most
general printing requirements on
continuous forms.
Document on Demand feature. A
feature that moves continuous forms
within the printer so that a blank
form is not ejected when separating
forms.
Dual Purpose Forms Device (F2).
A forms feeding option which, when
selected, automatically stops
continuous forms at the perforation.
This enables the printed form to be
torn off before the next sheet begins
to be printed.
F
feature. A particular part of an IBM
product that a customer can order
separately.
feed roller. See right roller
assembly.
form. The area between
perforations on continuous printer
paper.
form feed (FF). Paper movement
used to bring an assigned part of a
form to the printing position.
forms device. One of four
mechanical paper handling devices
that can be installed in the 4230
Printers.
forms guide/forms sensor. Blue
guide used to align the left edge of a
