Host Lockout Duration
When the ULTRA, the printer and the alternate host are powered on, the
coax host port and the alternate host port are available until a print job is
received. When a print job is received from either port, the ULTRA will
process that data and allow the other port to remain available.
To manage data simultaneously from an alternate host plus a coax host
requires the ULTRA to sense when each device has finished printing.
Otherwise, data from the coax host might be mixed with data from an
alternate host. A timing mechanism is used to manage the host ports. The
ULTRA will switch between coax host and alternate host print jobs after
both the print job is done and a user-defined lockout period has elapsed.
Refer to Section 5  Configuration Options. Option #40  Alternate Host
Lockout Duration specifies the number of seconds during a print job that
the ULTRA will wait without receiving a character before allowing another
host to control the output port. If no characters are printed from the current
host for three seconds (the default), the ULTRA is placed in neutral, and
any host may take control. Longer delays may be required to accommodate
slow printers or slow input devices.
Make the appropriate choice, referring for instructions to Section 8  Front
Panel Configuration or Section 9  Coax Host Configuration. (Once the
alternate host port is activated and otherwise configured, this option can be
changed via the alternate host itself. Refer to Section 10  Alternate Host
Configuration for instructions.) The appropriate time can be determined
only by trial and error. If too long a delay is entered, switching between
hosts may take longer than is necessary. If too short a delay time (0 to 10) is
entered for the lockout duration, two print jobs could become intermixed or
corrupted, because the ULTRA will switch between the coax host and
alternate host after each data block is processed.
If data is sent to a port before the current host has finished printing, the
port will show a busy condition until the ULTRA is placed in neutral. If the
ULTRA receives a print job from the alternate host and the coax host
simultaneously, the coax host print job will be printed first. The first 240
characters of the alternate host print job will be buffered until the host print
job is done.
Some alternate host hardware and software systems are incapable of
internally queueing a print job, and they will lock up if they send a print
job while a coax host job is being printed. The lock-up condition will
continue until the coax host print job is completed; then the alternate host
job will be printed.
